The
University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation
(IGCC) held a workshop to bring together UC faculty, National Laboratory scientists, and
other strategic thinkers to further develop a policy-oriented
multidisciplinary
program (funded by Carnegie) on biological threats and bioterrorism.
The meeting took place at UC San Diego.
The IGCC Public Policy and Biological Threats summer program
enters its second year with valuable experience gained from last
year’s
highly successful inaugural run. The program’s first cohort
featured Ph.D. students, post-docs, and junior faculty from biology,
chemistry, medicine, epidemiology,
public health, pharmacy, law, social psychology, public policy,
economics, and international relations programs. In addition,
many industry
professionals and governmental officials also participated in
the program. This year IGCC plans to expand the curriculum by
including
a more rigorous presentation of naturally emerging biological
and public health threats such as SARS, influenza, and tuberculosis.
